DUMB QUESTION BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT BETA IS ?

The new 5.1 version is beta ?
What exactly does that mean I am not familiar with beta or what it
means.
Does that have any bearing on why it is sooooooooo much slower than
the other versions ?
